Kogi: Korean Style BBQ Taco Truck
Everyone thought he was crazy when Los Angeles Chef, Roy Choi announced that he was going to start a taco truck. He and his partner, Mark were working at 5-star hotels around the city when they came up with the idea to put Korean BBQ meat in a taco. For Roy, the street taco was a part of his life since growing up in the L.A. area, so he knows the flavors. The name he decided to call his new venture is “Kogi”, which means “meat” in Korean. The “g” in “Kogi” is pronounced just like the “g” in “grill”. The Korean taco truck didn’t do too well their first day on the road. In fact, they didn’t get a single taco order. But one day, people started to try it out and liked it! They began taking pictures of the tacos and uploading them to their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Roy says he gives credit for his success mostly to Twitter because that’s how word spread about Kogi. Kogi now goes through 300 to 400 pounds of meat per day. I’d love to try one of those Bulgogi Tacos soon!
