Pigeon Racing in Seoul

A Little-Known Sport

January 30th, 2009

Racing PigeonsPigeon racing is slowly becoming a popular sport in Seoul.  Not sure why they call it a sport, so don’t quote me on that one.  My uncle has a huge pigeon cage filled with a few hundred breeds outside near a restaurant he owns and operates in Seoul.  He frequently asks me to locate top notch race birds from the United States for him, but I don’t know much about birds.  As I understand, racing season starts in the Spring.  These pigeons are not just ordinary pigeons off the street or from the city skies.  These are specially bred, and I guess it is important to know how they are raised.  If they are from racing award-winning parents, they are most likely to carry on the stamina of their parents to win races.  How do they race?  Racing pigeons are identified by a coded ring around their ankles.  According to my uncle, you can take these birds to another country a few hundred or thousand miles away, and they will find their way back home within a few days or weeks.  If there are any pigeon racing enthusiasts out there who would like to have a contact in Seoul, feel free to send me an email.  Thanks!

  1. Hi, I would like to have a pigeon contact in Seoul. I have raced pigeons in Scotland for a number of years. Pass on my regards to your uncle. Thank you……Ray

  2. P.S. I also collect Racing pigeon leg rings ( NOT fancy pigeon rings )from all over the world, with the oldest one I that I have from the year 1895. If there are any pigeon fanciers out there reading this who has any rings of any years lying around then I would really appreciate them for my collection. Any expenses would of course be reimbursed. Many thanks………..Ray

  4. We had a pigeon arrive at ours a couple of days ago. It has a green ring on his left leg, which i cant see anything on yet, and a yellow ring with gold bands round the top and bottom,on the right leg with this on it (1017083, 2009, il). Can anyone tell me the meanings of these as the bird does not seem interested in moving on. It has arrived in Norfolk.
